Especially water pipes that run along exterior walls.

Some of these pipes include kitchen supply lines on the interior and water supply spigots on the exterior.  If your kitchen is on an exterior wall, check that it is insulated.  You can purchase pipe insulation from your local hardware store.  If you can’t tell whether the pipe is insulated, make sure to leave your cabinet door slightly open, so warm air can enter.  Overnight, leave your water faucet on slightly so a steady stream of water runs through and prevents freezing. For an exterior spigot, make sure to shut off the supply line from the basement.  After you’ve done that, open the supply line on the outside and let all trapped water out.

This will make sure that the pipe doesn’t expand and burst, a problem you will not know you have until you decide to water your grass the following spring.  This can be especially messy because the escaping water will end up running through the walls and floors of your home or business.
