Your couches, loungers, and easy chairs are some of your favorite places to relax in your home. With Valentine’s Day coming up here in Wicker Park, you may have planned to have dinner or watch a movie at home. Either way, you’ll want your upholstery to look bright and fresh for the holiday.

Keeping your couches clean is one thing, especially if you have children, but keeping them clean after eating chocolate and candy on Valentine’s Day is another. ServiceMaster Cleaning By Simons has the expertise in upholstery cleaning to help clean up any mess that may happen to get on your couches.

Here are some simple tips to keep messes from soiling your couches.

    Cleaning chocolate stains

Chocolate, the yummy, melt-in-your-mouth treat we all love, can leave some long lasting stains on your upholstery. To remove chocolate stains, make a solution of cold water and colorless dish liquid. Wet a cloth in the solution and wipe the upholstery starting from the rim of the stain. Use cornstarch to dry up the rest of the stain and repeat until most of the stain has disappeared.

    Gum

Getting gum on your upholstery can be an absolute headache. The most popular way to remove gum from your couch is to ice the sticky culprit until it becomes hard enough to chip off. Put the ice in a sandwich bag to keep the fabric from getting wet.

    Sticky candy stains

Toffee, caramels, and sticky taffies are just as bad as gum, if not worse, because they can leave an oily residue behind. Similar to the method for cleaning gum off upholstery, use ice in a sandwich bag to harden the candy and scrape of the bits that you can. Then, using a pre-wash stain remover or liquid laundry detergent diluted in warm water, dampen a cloth and gently scrub the stain.

    Red Wine

Getting red wine on your couch is a headache that people never want to deal with. Immediately blot (don’t wipe) the stain with a dry cloth to soak up as much liquid as you can. In two cups of cold water, add a small amount of dish liquid or dry cleaning solvent and sponge the stain. Repeat as needed until the stain is gone.
