With the weather warming up, the chances of flooding and tornadoes hitting the greater Chicago area, including the Streeterville neighborhood, intensify. After all, as many of you may recall, the National Weather Service issued tornado warnings and flash flood watches during mid-August last year. To prepare for the onslaught of severe weather, barricades were put up along the Chicago River, and hundreds of flights both into and out of O’Hare International Airport were cancelled. Wicked weather can happen at any time and in any place.

Below are several helpful tips from Farm Bureau Insurance that you can implement if severe weather strikes your Chicago neighborhood this spring, summer, and beyond:

TORNADOES: Put a bicycle helmet on to protect against flying debris. This extra layer of protection could help prevent a head injury during a tornado.

FLOODS: IF you get caught in your car in deep water, you can use the car seat’s headrest to break the window to escape.

THUNDERSTORMS: If you run out of AA batteries for flashlights or other electronics, you can convert AAA batteries with a ball of foil. Just insert a ball of foil between the negative end of the AAA battery and the device to generate power.

POWER OUTAGES: Turn a can of Crisco or lard into a candle in an emergency. Just place a string or piece of cotton into the middle of a can of Crisco and light it.

Of course, your safety and that of your family is paramount during a severe weather event. After the water has receded and the debris has settled, call ServiceMaster Restoration By Simons immediately at 773-376-1110 if you find yourself in need of expert natural disaster restoration services in the Streeterville neighborhood.
