Fire Prevention Cooking Tips for Chicago Residents

ServiceMaster Restoration by Simons provides smoke and fire damage restoration to Chicago homes.

From 2007 – 2011, there were almost home 156,600 fires caused by cooking equipment. The biggest factor in these fires was leaving the stove or oven unattended while cooking, contributing to massive loss from fire damage and many deaths. It’s important to develop smart cooking habits to prevent the need for fire restoration and fire damage cleanup in Chicago, IL.

Never leave utensils on the stove while cooking. Spatulas can melt, potholders can catch on fire, and so can clothes. Be sure to keep your range and stove top clear of flammable materials and items that don’t necessarily need to be there.

Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Check your extinguisher yearly to make sure it still functions properly, or that it is full if you’ve recently had to use it. Never try to put out a kitchen fire with water, as you may increase the flames and fire damage.

Never leave a stove unattended. Try not to cook distracted. If you have to answer the phone or step away, turn off all burners on the range. Always make sure the oven is turned off when you are done baking.

In addition to following the steps above, keep emergency services numbers in an easily accessible spot, such as on the fridge. While many house fires can be prevented by a fire extinguisher and a quick response, you should immediately evacuate if it grows beyond your control.

A fire escape plan can help you remain safe. If you can’t evacuate, be sure to open a window and hang a t-shirt or bed sheet from the window to signal to fire fighters your location in the building.

House fires are common, but they are extremely preventable. However, sometimes the worst happens. When you need fire restoration in Chicago, just call ServiceMaster Restoration by Simons.
